An A to Z list of soccer coaches in South Bend


  • Bella, Joe – coached in youth and adult leagues in Michiana during the soccer boom in the late 1970s.
  • Berticelli, Mike – a successful head coach for Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 1990 to 1999, and helping to bring national soccer conferences to South Bend.
  • Clark, Bobby – former Scotland national player who coached Notre Dame Fighting Irish between 2001 and 2017, while being a fountain of knowledge for local coaches and helping to organize coaching clinics in South Bend.
  • Cordischi, Andy – husband to Marg and coach to a 15 to 18-year-old boys team and a 13 to 18-year-old girls team in the late 1970s. His enthusiasm was key to the large uptake of soccer in the Knollwood area.
  • Cordischi, Marg – wife to Andy and coach to a team of nine to 12-year-old girls in the late 1970s.
  • Cunningham, Frank – coached a championship-winning grade 5/6 team at Saint Joseph Grammar School.
  • Ganzberg, Vince – played at Bethel College and coached at high school level in South Bend, going on to educate coaches around the country (currently with United Soccer Coaches).
  • Grace, Dennis – a successful head coach for Notre Dame Fighting Irish between 1984 and 1989, while also leading the women’s soccer program (as well as the men’s) between ’88 and ’89.
  • Fingerhut, Bruce – coached at Trinity School at Greenlawn from 1982 to 1991.
  • Freitag, Ron – coached varsity soccer at Saint Joseph High School for multiple seasons.
  • Hofman, Hank – early coach for Jr Irish Soccer Club, and husband to Pheobe.
  • Hunter, Rich – appointed head coach of soccer at University of Notre Dame in 1977 alongside coaching a local team of seven to eight-year-olds.
  • Joyce, Michael – former coach at Saint Mary’s Belles.
  • Loux, Michael – coached a championship-winning grade 5/6 team at Saint Joseph Grammar School.
  • Lund, George – long-term coach at The Stanley Clark School, and also coached at Clay High School
  • MacKenzie, Caryn – head coach of girls soccer at John Adams High School between 1994 and 2003, then 2014 and 2019, in addition to coaching at Riley High School, Saint Mary’s College, Junior Irish Soccer Club, and Clay High School, and running clinics for United Soccer Coaches.
  • McNamara, Edward – a former coach for Michiana Soccer Association, Junior Irish, and John Adams High School.
  • Patterson, Larry – stepped up to the head coach role at Saint Joseph High School and led the team to an undefeated season – the first time a high school team from Indiana had achieved such a feat.
  • Payne, Dan – mentored high school children to help them become coaches, while also coaching his own teams in the local area.
  • Rompola, Randy – successful regional and state-wide coach who worked at Saint Mary’s College for over a decade, as well as former president of Michiana Echo and board member of Indiana Soccer Foundation.
  • Siebert Sr, Kurt – coached on the soccer program at Penn High School (which he started with his son) for eight years, and was an assistant coach at University of Notre Dame for four years.
  • Tallman, Jim – coached the soccer team at The Stanley Park School after being hired as athletic director in 1972, and later reached an IHSAA State Championship Final as head coach of John Adams High School.
  • Ungethum, Duane – successful girls’ coach for Jr Irish Soccer Club in the 1990s.
  • Van Meter, Tom – former assistant coach at University of Notre Dame and the first soccer coach of the Saint Joseph High School varsity program, which began in the late 1970s.
  • Verteramo, Alberto – current head coach at Saint Joseph High School and played for South Bend Stallions with his two brothers, Frank and Warren.
